Corded handheld · 2D imager

Zebra DS2208

The scanner most counters and stockrooms should be buying. It reads an ordinary product barcode, a QR code, and a barcode held up on a customer's phone - which a laser scanner cannot do at all.

Plugs into a PC by USB and types what it reads, as if somebody had typed it. No software, no driver, no configuration to get the first scan working.

The DS2208 kit - the corded scanner viewed front on with its imager window visible, the black gooseneck hands-free stand, and the shielded USB cable.
What $149 buys - scanner, hands-free stand and shielded USB cable. Part DS2208-SR7U2100SGW, exactly as Zebra ships it.

Why this one

An imager, not a laser.

This is the whole decision, and it is usually the only one that matters when somebody is choosing between the DS2208 and the older LS2208 sitting next to it at a lower price.

01

It reads a phone

A laser reflects light off a printed bar. A screen does not reflect that way, so a laser scanner reads nothing at all from a phone. Loyalty cards, e-tickets, emailed order numbers and delivery dockets increasingly arrive on glass rather than paper.

02

It reads 2D codes

QR and Data Matrix are square blocks rather than bars, and a laser cannot see them either. They turn up on parts, on pathology samples, on Australia Post labels, and on anything asked to carry more than a number.

03

It reads a damaged label

An imager takes a photograph and decodes the picture, so a barcode that is scuffed, creased or under wrinkled shrinkwrap is often still readable. That is the difference between a count that finishes and one that stops.

The whole difference is fifty dollars. The 1D-only scanners sit at $99 - the LS2208 laser, and the LI2208 which does the same job without a moving mirror. This one is $149. If everything you scan is a printed 1D barcode and always will be, buy the cheaper one and we will happily sell it to you; the LS2208 has been doing that job reliably since before some of your staff started. The question is only whether anything you scan will ever arrive on a screen - because the day it does, the $99 scanner cannot be made to read it.

What it costs

Part numbers and prices.

Buying more than one

Zebra quantity pricing, held until 31 January 2027. Same scanner, same kit — the price per unit drops with the number on the order.

  • 5 $134 each $670 the lot — saves $75
  • 10 $121 each $1,210 the lot — saves $280

Warranty

5 years, return to base — the unit comes back to us for repair or replacement rather than somebody coming out to you. Warranty runs by model rather than by price, so it is worth checking against whatever else you are comparing.

01

In stock in Australia, and it ships straight to you

Every scanner on this site is held in an Australian warehouse rather than on a shelf in Sydney, and it goes from there to your door without stopping at our office. That saves a leg of freight and a day. Paid before 2pm on a business day and it generally leaves the same day.

02

Stock is first come, first served

Which is the honest half of the sentence above. A run on one model can mean a wait, and you will hear that from us when you ask rather than after you have paid.

03

Tell us the part number and how many

That is genuinely all we need. You get a written quote back with freight worked out to your actual address, because a scanner to Parramatta and one to Port Hedland are not the same delivery and we would rather not pretend otherwise. A new account pays before it ships, and the clock starts when the payment confirms.

04

Been comparing online? Send us the quote

If you have a written quote from somebody else on the same part number, we will match it. No haggling required, and no need to pretend you have not been looking.

Not sure this is the right one?

Tell us what you are scanning and where. Thirty-five years of these conversations says the answer is usually simpler, and cheaper, than it looks from the inside.
